台中榮將軍放射腫瘤科主任「林進清」說，癌症時鍾轉得很快。據估計，在中國，每5分鍾就有一人患癌症，在治療期間每21分鍾就有一名癌症患者患口腔粘膜炎。也就是說，大約60%的癌症患者患有口腔粘膜炎，90%的患者患有頭頸癌，因為治療地點離口腔最近。

林進清指出，根據口腔粘膜炎的嚴重程度分為1級或4級，3級以上的口腔會出現大膿、潰瘍、出血，相當於三級燒傷和燙傷；46%的病人有感染的危險，因為疼痛不能進食，60%的病人有營養不良問題，平均體重減輕4公斤。
由於疼痛，有些患者會要求醫生減少化療劑量以減少副作用，但林進清認為這不是解決辦法，因為低劑量的化療會影響癌症的療效，最好的方法是控制和處理口腔黏膜炎。台中榮總臨床試驗表明，含1%預衛酮碘的漱口水可輕度控制口腔粘膜炎的嚴重程度。

“口腔粘膜炎的治療應結合止痛、消毒和營養，化療開始時應使用含碘漱口。林進清說，普羅維酮碘常用於外科消毒傷口。可以在普通藥房購買（250cc或300元左右）。其滅菌效果優於普通漱口水，也可適用於健康人群。像往常一樣漱口。

不少痔瘡患者，當出現排便帶血時，以為只是痔瘡出血，便容易對屙血問題掉以輕心，外科專科郭寶賢 醫生指出排便帶血是腸癌的明顯病徵，而腸癌與痔瘡是可以共同存在的，若發現出血情況，便應立即求醫檢查，以免錯過及早治療的機會。

一天前，河心癌症中心醫院的專科護士張興立照顧了一位鼻咽癌患者。放療後第一周出現口腔粘膜炎。由於治療不充分，放射治療第四周後口腔粘膜細胞變得越來越嚴重。舌頭和嘴都曬黑了，感染引起了膿毒性休克。幸運的是，除了抗生素治療，他們還得到了適當的口腔護理和碘漱口水護理。在住院41天後，他們終於康複並返回家園。
